With attacking midfielder Kelechi Nwakali tipped to start for the Super Eagles in the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Seychelles on Saturday, we now look at the different formations that coach Gernot Rohr could use to fit him in.
Nwakali has been given the number 10 shirt for the match due to take place at the Stade Linite.
However, the former Golden Eaglets’ ‘number 10’ position is far from certain. Rohr hardly played with a playmaker in his squad.
On Saturday, the tactician, will be tweaking his formations and not always adhering to one system all the time.
After all, familiarity means that the opposition will find it easier to play against them.
Oghenekaro Etebo, Ogenyi Onazi, Semi Ajayi, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi and Joel Obi will give Rohr more options but increase dilemma on which players to leave out of the starting line-up.
We now look at the different formations that the ex Niger Republic gaffer can use.
The ‘back five’ of the Eagles is almost certainly not going to change. Francis Uzoho will start in goal. Jamilu Collins will feature at right-back, Leon Balogun and Kenneth Omeruo will be the two centre-backs, and Brian Idowu will be at left-back.
Ogenyi Onazi, Kelechi Nwakali and Wilfred Ndidi will be in the starting line-up, which means that Rohr will have the following two formations readily available to him: 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa will have to be in the team at all times, and so will Samuel Kalu.
