A world class free kick from Chinedu Udeagha proved to be enough for Wikki Tourists to record a 1-0 win over Rivers United in the Nigeria Professional Football League week four on Wednesday.

It was the first victory for the Usman Abd’Allah managed Tourists while Stanley Eguma’s men suffered their first defeat of the season.

Wikki Tourists started the game by winning two corners in the opening five minutes with Andrew Abalogu, Udeagha, Matthew Emmanuel and Promise Damala looking dangerous.

Bamba Bakary delivered a well knitted cross to Chika Godwin after seven minutes, but the former couldn’t direct his header on target.

Cletus Emotan was denied by Stanley Nwabali while Nazifi Yahaya failed to connect Andrew Abalogu’s cross.

Former Rangers forward Godwin Aguda had a big opportunity in the 27th minute when he had goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali at his mercy, but the keeper made himself big to narrow the angle from point-blank range.

The deadlock was finally broken in traditional Chinedu Udeagha style, as he whipped home a delicious free kick which left goalkeeper Abiodun Akande stranded on the half hour.

United keeper Akande had to be alert in the 34th minute. Nazifi Yahaya’s low cross was picked up by Idris Guda who released a volley to the top corner and Akande dived at full stretch to make the save.

Yahaya had a good chance to score on the counter, but Kunle Odunlami made a brave block from 12 yards.

Aguda got down quickly to a Cletus Emotan daisy-cutter and Chika Godwin fired over from a tricky angle after a well-worked passing move.

First half ended 1-0 in favour of Wikki Tourists at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium.

The hosts straight on the offensive in the second period. Abalogu caused the Rivers defence major problems with his pace before squaring a pass to Guda, who let fly from the edge of the box.

The game continued to open up and Akande made an unorthodox reaction save off Guda’s thunderous strike.

Guda had a huge chance to double the leader, as his effort took a deflection that would wrong-foot most goalkeepers, but Akande managed to pull off a one handed save.
