It was another exciting round of fixtures in the Nigeria Professional Football League in which a total of 19 goals were scored with all but one fixture producing a goal. Here is our matchday 5 round-up.

Rivers United remained top of the Nigerian Professional Football League after beating Heartland FC 2-1 at the Adokiye Amesiamaka Stadium in Port Hartcourt. Godwin Aguda gave Rivers United the lead from the penalty spot in the 19th minute before Enyinnaya Kazie and Malachi Ohawuma scored in the second half to make it 3-0 for the Pride of Rivers. Shedrack Oghali scored the consolation goal for Heartland who remain in the relegation zone.

Nasarawa United remained unbeaten in the NPFL and moved up to second on the table after a narrow one nil victory over Katsina United with Silas Nwankwo scoring the winner just after half-time.

In the big match of the weekend between former champions Enyimba FC and Kano Pillars the People’s Elephant came out victorious with a 2-1 win at the Enyimba Stadium. Anayo Iwuala and Gabriel Orok scored for Enyimba while Fahad Usman got the consolation for Kano Pillars. The win sees Enyimba move past Kano Pillars into 5th on the NPFL log.

In Lagos, Enugu Rangers continued its good run of form in the NPFL after drawing 1-1 with MFM at the Aggege Stadium. Ugwuoke Ugochukwu gave the Flying Antelopes the lead in the 24th minute but the lead lasted just five minutes as Balogun Muyiwa equalized for the Oluloya Boys. Since losing to Rivers United on the opening day of the season, Rangers have won three and drawn one and find themselves in the 4th position on the table.

In Makurdi, Lobi Stars returned back to winning ways after beating Dakkada FC 2-1 at the Aper Akum Stadium. Samuel Mathias gave Lobi the lead in the 15th minute but Christian Ekong equalized for Dakkada in the 71st minute. However, a late penalty from Austin Ogunye gave all three points for Lobi Stars.

In Jos, Plateau United thrashed Adamawa United 3-0 at the New Jos Stadium. Amos Gyang gave United the lead from the penalty spot just before half time before two late goals from Kingsley Innocent and Wasiu Jimoh sealed the points for the former NPFL champions.

In Akure, a stoppage-time goal from Sadeeq Yusuf ensured that Sunshine Stars returned back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Warri Wolves while in the Oriental Derby of the Day, FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Abia Warriors shared the points with a 1-1 draw. Samuel Christian gave Abia Warriors the early lead on the 9th minute while Christian Molokwu grabbed the equalizer for the Anambra Warriors in the 78th minute. Both sides are still in the relegation zone after the match.
