Nigerian born striker Simeon Akinola struck once but it was not enough with Southend United suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cambridge United in the English League 2 on Tuesday night.
The home team controlled the match in the first half and raced into lead after twenty-seven minutes, courtesy of Samuel Akinola.
Jack Iredale and Joe Ironside scored in the second stanza as Cambridge United won at Roots Hall.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Akinola moved to Madrid aged three. He started playing futsal aged nine before joining Alcorcón after a successful trial, later moving to London.
Akinola is eligible to play for Nigeria and Spain at international level. He was called up by England C in May 2015, but was forced to withdraw.
The Economics first class degree holder had spells at Boreham Wood, Barnet, Harrow Borough and Braintree Town in the past.
