Junior Ajayi’s goal disallowed as Ahly win Bronze Medal at Club World Cup

Junior Ajayi’s Al Ahly secured the bronze medal at the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating Brazilian side Palmeiras via the penalty shoot-out on Thursday evening.

The 36 Lion graduate had a goal disallowed in the entertaining game.

Chances were hard to come by and coach Pitso Mosimane made a double change just before the hour-mark, with Junior Ajayi taking the place of Bwalya upfront while Mohamed Sherif came on for Kafsha in midfield.

The changes for the Red Devils almost had a desired effect in the 68th minute as Ajayi found the back of the net but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Patrick de Paula had a great chance to snatch the winner for the Brazilian side in the last ten minutes after receiving a pass with space inside the box but he scuffed his shot just wide.

The game was in the balance in the dying minutes, with both sides looking to steal it but they lacked the finishing touches and the match went straight to penalties after a goalless stalemate in regulation time.

There was drama in the shootouts, with back-to-back penalty misses from both sides for two consecutive spot-kicks but Ajayi was the hero in the end for Al Ahly, as he scored the winning goal.
