Enyimba Sunday evening qualified for the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup winning 5-4 on penalties after both teams played out to a 1-1 aggregate over two legs.
The People’s Elephants won the first leg 1-0 in Aba, but Rivers United canceled out the goal in the return leg in Port Harcourt on Sunday evening.
However, in the ensuing penalty shootout Enyimba triumphed 5-4 after it dragged into sudden death.
The eight-time Nigerian champions held out until the 43rd minute, when Fortune Omoniwari’s strike beyond the impressive goalkeeper John Noble.
Rivers United continued to take the game to Enyimba after the interval but couldn’t find a way past them.
The game therefore had to be decided on penalties and after Enyimba lost their first kick, John Noble then pulled off saves Kunle Odunlami and Emmanuel Israel that gave them hope to fight back and win 5-4 on penalties in sudden death.
