Scenes in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season shows why referees must get to grips with players wasting time.
To be clear: from a player’s perspective, time-wasting is most likely an impulse. Modern football is physically exhausting, its rewards are opulent and, when a match creeps towards its end, the temptation to do anything necessary just to get over the line must be overwhelming. Most people understand that. So, while it could be argued that there’s a moral obligation not to waste time, the burden of eradicating it falls upon the game’s officiating bodies.
It will only disappear once it starts being properly policed and, clearly, that isn’t the case at the moment.
Below are Top 5 “time wasting” goalkeepers so far in the current NPFL season…….
- Jean Efala – Akwa United
The Akwa United shot stopper is constantly kept busy, faced with a flurry of shots and is always up to his game when his team-mates aren’t. He delays whenever his team is on momentum.
- Paul Godwin – Jigawa Golden Stars
Paul Godwin has been around the scene for almost two decades. He had a great stint with Enyimba in the past. Currently at Jigawa Golden Stars, the keeper is a reliable figure behind the sticks. This list of time wasters won’t be complete without him.
- Ikechukwu Ezenwa – Heartland
Though Ezenwa seemed to be a bit inconsistent in his displays, showcasing both extremes of the spectrum, he maintains his spot in third place. On his day, he is a good goalkeeper who makes time wasting a priority.
- Mustapha Aliko – Lobi Stars
Aliko has largely impressed with his displays for Lobi Stars whenever the time arises. With years of experience, he commands his backline very well. Aliko’s time wasting spree doesn’t help his time at times, which cost them games.
- Stanley Nwabali – Wikki Tourists
Maintaining his spot at the top, and likely to do so right till the end of the season is the ever impressive time waster. Nwabali is very much a modernist in this trade. At any opportunity, he falls down and removes his gloves calling for medical attention. That doesn’t take anything from his ability and distribution that sets him apart from the rest on the pitch.
Do you think these are the top five time wasters in the NPFL?
