Sunshine edge Edo Queens in entertaining Super 6 cracker

Goals from Suliat Abideen and Sunday Abigail earned Sunshine Queens a precious 2-1 victory over Edo Queens in an entertaining Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Super 6 clash on Tuesday.

All goals were scored in the first half but the second was equally entertaining as Edo Queens piled on pressure and Sunshine Queens uncharacteristically sat back to protect their slender advantage.

Sunshine Queens’ victory puts them in the driving seat as they seek to win the league title for the first time.

The Akure based side overwhelmed their opponents from the outset, displaying an intricate passing game.

The breakthrough arrived in the 8th minute when Abideen got the better of goalkeeper Nkiruka Obindinma through a sweet free kick.

Elizabeth Zirike, who was an otherwise peripheral figure, brought Edo Queens level in the 20th minute with a carbon-copy of her usual recipe she cut inside a couple of challengers and planted an unstoppable 25 yards screamer beyond Elizabeth Johnson.

Before Edo Queens could settle down, another Tsunami hit them two minutes later. Sunday restored the Owena Mermaids’ lead.

Edo Queens suffered a crushing blow when Zirike was subbed off for Efe Osakpolor due to injury.

In the second half, Sunshine Queens were pegged back as Edo Queens frantically searched for an equaliser.

Taibat Odueke sprayed a pass over the top for Glory Osaghae, who peeled away from her marker but then dragged a tame shot wide of the far post.

Substitute Mercy Idoko did well by pulling the trigger but former Adamawa Queens keeper Obindinma picked it up.

At end of proceedings, it was a priceless win for Sunshine Stars who now have four points from two games.

Edo Queens are pointless after two matches, following defeats to Delta Queens and Sunshine Queens.
