Two late goals from Tony Eliagwu and Obiorah Emeka on 83 and 89 minutes helped Rangers International F.C overcome a hard fighting Enugu state league side, De-Don F.C of Nsukka 3-1 in a practice match played inside U.N.N stadium, Nsukka, Tuesday.
Daniel Vendaga had shot the ‘Flying Antelopes’ into the lead on 32 minutes after he was set up by Ikechukwu Eboko to break the resistance of the state league side.
Efforts to increase the tally before the break could not materialize even as chances came the way of Chinonso Eziekwe, Samuel Pam and Moses Effiong.
Against the run of play, the Nsukka based side that is owned by Enugu state football Association boss, Barrister Tony Ugwu, got the equalizer on 67 minutes when Okechukwu Okafor latched onto a loose ball to fire beyond a stranded Seidu Mutawakilu.
Coach Benedict Ugwu who stood in for head coach, Mbwas Mangut for the practice match, said after the encounter, “It was a good game we got from De-Don F.C and the result is a true reflection of what happened in the game. We continue to work on the team with the hope of getting a perfect and balanced team to challenge on all fronts when the season starts.”
Captain of the ‘Flying Antelopes’, Tope Olusesi, said of the encounter, “It was a good game and the very first match since we went into close camping. We expected such a game from a youthful side that took the advantage of playing against Rangers to raise their game. We did not lie low but took the game to them and got the win which matters most in every football match.”
The match was watched by an appreciable number of fans at the university community that also had Igbo-Eze South LGA chairman, Hon. Andy Omeje, in attendance, said after the match, “This was a great display of soccer artistry at its best from Rangers even when their opponents proved difficult at some point in the game but you showed class and got the win. I am optimistic of a very good run in the coming season and we shall have enough trophies to celebrate at the end of the season.”
In another development, players and officials of NPFL side, Rangers International F.C were, Tuesday, October 19, 2021, treated to a sumptuous breakfast by Enugu state F.A chairman, Hon. Barrister Tony Ugwu at his Obukpa, Nsukka, residence with different local delicacies served.
The two-term Nsukka LGA chairman in a brief remark before breakfast was served, said, “I feel highly elated to have the almighty Rangers International F.C in my abode at Obukpa and it is not out of place to host you to this little breakfast as a show of support towards achieving the set targets of the team in the coming season.”
