While a large number of the Super Eagles players had started training already for the upcoming AFCON competition that will be starting on Sunday. Odion Ighalo, the Super Eagles forward has been constrained by his club Al Shabab in going to the AFCON competition. It has been reported that the statement is clear from the club that he won’t be released.
It’s four days left for the competition to start and to be very honest with you, this question has been pondering in my mind, how will Ighalo be fully integrated into Augustine Eguavoen’s Super Eagles team if he’s hasn’t joined the team early? It’s a difficult one to call for me. Attackers are expected to be the first personalities to show up in the training camp.
Obviously, Ighalo is the Super Eagles’ most preferred striker for this competition. He has that experience and knowledge of this big competition. The last time out, he finished the 2019 AFCON being the highest goal scorer with five goals. However, we have got to look at the development of a new squad. There are some new faces in the team and they are expected to put together some sort of style of play in the training session. Eventually, he’s going to be rushed into the team.
Why not embrace the easy choice? There’s a free striker that’s available for Ighalo’s replacement in this competition. In-person of Cyriel Desser, a Feyenoord striker that has been in hot form this season. He has scored 9 goals in 21 games. I think Nigeria is too big to be waiting for a single player, there are so many players available for recruitment even in the NPFL. The earlier we start trusting and appreciating these players, the better it will be for us.
