Super Eagles defence which has been a major headache in recent times is facing fresh challenges following the exit of Leon Balogun from Rangers of Scotland

Rangers refused to renew the contract of Balogun which expired this season and the former Wigan Athletic ace has bid farewell to Ibrox Stadium.

In a post on social media, Balogun said, it was an ‘absolute privilege’ to play for the Gers.

The Nigeria international is now a free agent after he was released by the club following the expiration of his contract.

Balogun joined the Scottish Premiership giants in 2020 after completing a short-term deal with Wigan Athletic.

Recall that Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong wasn’t part of the team’s 10-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe in a recent AFCON 2023 qualifier.

Ekong’s form is widely believed to have gone deep following his inaction for his relegated club Watford towards the end of the concluded season.

This created huge concern for Super Eagles defence while Gernot Rohr was in-charge.

Indeed the situation of the two most reliable central defensive pair of the Super Eagles may be giving new manager Jose Peseiro gray hairs in days or weeks to come.
