Middlesbrough have decided to release ex-Newcastle United man Sammy Ameobi.

The club has opted against extending his contract at the Riverside.

Ameobi, who is 30 years old, is a free agent this summer and will be weighing up his next move.

Sammy Ameobi moved to Middlesbrough last season.

The Nigerian was plagued by an injury to his knee though and remarkably he failed to make a single appearance for Boro.

It has proved a nightmare year for the man who found some form at Forest. He was perhaps unfortunate to get released by Chris Hughton, given that the Reds struggled to add players last summer.

He started his career at Newcastle United and rose up through their youth ranks before making 75 appearances for their first-team. He also had loan spells away in the Football League at Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers.

Bolton made his move to the North West permanent in 2017 and he was a key player for the Trotters in the Championship for two seasons before joining Nottingham Forest.

The pacey wide man is now available and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
