Oshoala ruled out of WAFCON: Striker to miss rest of tournament after Ligament Strain

Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala will play no further part at Women Africa Cup of Nations after she was ruled out of the tournament with a ligament injury.

The Barcelona forward sustained Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament Strain against South Africa on Monday and the damage is significant enough to bring an early finish to her WAFCON 2022 campaign.

Oshoala wasn’t at her usual best in the Super Falcons’ 2-1 loss to Banyana Banyana.

Unable to call up a replacement, boss Randy Waldrum is left with 24 players after Chidinma Okeke was the first Super Falcons player to pull out.

A statement from the NFF read: “Sad news from @NGSuper_Falcons camp: Top striker @AsisatOshoala is out of the ongoing #WAFCON2022.”

“She sustained a Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament strain in the game against South Africa. She is due back in Spain on Thursday. Get well quick Asisat!

The attacking onus will remain on Ifeoma Onumonu, Rasheedat Ajibade, Francisca Ordega, Monday Gift and Uchenna Kanu as the team aims to qualify for the next World Cup.
