Akwa United began their quest for another Aiteo Cup glory with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Nationwide League side Essien Ayi FC of Calabar in the round of 64 game played at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.

Goals from captain Ubong Friday and Samuel Amadi gave Coach Ayodeji Ayeni’s team a comfortable lead in the first half, before Austin Osayande’s effort in the 52nd minute secure the Promise Keepers’ passage to round 32 of the oldest club competition in Nigeria.

Winger Samuel Amadi’s ball was pushed out for a corner kick. Babatunde Bello sent in a curling effort, David Onovo headed it towards goal but the goalkeeper saved it.

The Promise Keepers kept probing the stubborn minnows in the game. Onovo’s strike was blocked to the path of Amadi. The winger tried to chip it over the goalie but his attempt was saved. 

Austin Osayande’s long-range strike was tipped over by the shot stopper. It was a good strike.

Akwa United raced into the lead through Ubong Friday in the 24th minute. The winger stylishly back-heeled James Ajako’s low pass into the back of the net. 

Super Eagles invitee Bello Babatunde shot over the bar from outside the box after good work by Friday and Ajako.

In the 38th minute, the former Aiteo Cup Kings doubled their lead. Samuel Amadi fired home inside the box. Ubong Friday provided the sumptuous assist.

Seven minutes into the second stanza, the Uyo based team scored again. Ubong Friday picked up a loose ball in the midfield and located Samuel Amadi. The A&B product did well to beat his marker before sending a square pass to Austin Osayande inside the box. The midfielder composed himself and scored beautifully.

Goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka savef Essien Ayi’s dangerous free kick and played it first-time to David Onovo who flicked it to Ezekiel Bassey, but the winger couldn’t get his effort on target.
