Kogi United caused an upset in the Aiteo Cup on Saturday. The Lokoja based side defeated Mighty Jets 3-2 at FIFA Goal Project Technical Centre.

Kogi United football club raced into an early lead in the 11th minute of play after Abdulwahab Jibril powered a superb shot from long distance past Abdullateef in goal for Mighty Jets .The goal spurred both sides into raising their game as they pushed relentlessly into each other’s box despite the torrential downpour emanating from the Abuja weather.

The guys from the Tin City almost levelled up in the 19th minutes when Eric Gwammy latched on to the ball that came his way. He wasted no time in blasting a grounder towards Shola Sheshere who was readily waiting but his effort went high above the bar. Sheshere was called into action again shortly when Sagir decided to try the bulky goaltender from distance, but he calculated well to get his hands to the ball.

Sagir who had become tormentor-in-chief in the Kogi United defence brought his side level in the 29th minute after he took a long range effort that beat Shola Sheshere. Mighty Jets continued their onslaught on the Kogi United defence as the equalizer seemec to have awakened the consciousness in them. They pushed their opponents back into their half in the dying minutes of the first half.

Kogi United’s Lasisi Tosin would have put his side ahead before the break when Abubakar Danlami sent him a long pass.

Fresh from the dugout for the second half, Kogi United took the game one step forward when Haruna Isah went close and would have put them in front with an early second half corner he curled perfectly inside but Abdullateef was there waiting. A defensive blunder from the United’s defence gifted Mighty Jets the lead in the 53rd minute.

Interim Coach Chidi Oji quickly drafted in Omajagwu Umoru to replace Lasisi Tosin.

Luck smiled on Kogi United through new entrant Omolabi Owolabi whose entry caused so much headache, he sneaked into the Mighty Jets defence and slot in effortlessly, bringing his side on level terms.

Tanko bagged a late match winner to send Kogi United fans into frenzy.
