There were several interesting results on the weekend of the CAF Inter Club competitions for Nigerian clubs, producing the following talking points.
Wasiu Jimoh adapting to his new home
Wasiu Jimoh is the closest thing to a guarantee of goals and he was at his ruthless best in Kwara United’s 3-1 win over Berkane, scoring once.
He has now four goals in his last two games at the CAF Confederation Cup.
Teku has quickly endeared himself to the home fans, who already have a chant in his honour, and finishing top scorer in the competition must already be among his objectives.
New season, same old Chukwu
Maurice Chukwu commanded the midfield with confidence and flair. He seems to have instantly struck up a strong understanding with his seasoned partners.
Chukwu was in unstoppable form and provided an assist during the difficult win over Wydad Casablanca in Port Harcourt.
He helped free the likes of Nyima Nwagua, Malachi Ohawume and Paul Acquah when needed.
Itodo The Nigerian Delap
It may only be the early days but Plateau United are in dreamland after defeating Esperance 2-1, and so is Daniel Itodo, who provided two assists in the win.
The full back proved the difference in a finely balanced game with the Tunisian side in a moment of pure class which showcased both his footballing intelligence and ruthlessness. He ushered his teammate to the box and delivered two Rory Delap-esque long thrusts.
He has also provided four assists so far in the CAF Champions League, if he can sustain this remarkable form in Tunis then Esperance will be in serious trouble.
Junior and Taofeeq propel Kwara United to a comeback victory
Kwara United had waited 15 years for action on the continent, but it was worth it as they enjoyed a hugely satisfactory win over Berkane, inspired by Ayobami Junior and Taofeeq Ahmed.
Taofeeq scored on his debut goal to cancel out Cheick Ouattara’s opener, beating Hamza Hamiani with a precise finish.
Fellow attacker Wasiu Jimoh, was the team’s focal point throughout the game and it was fitting that he got the second goal. Playmaker Ayobami Junior brilliantly provided the assist for Barnabas Daniel.
Azeez Mohammed’s side know picking a positive result in Berkane will not be easy However, with an attacking duo like Junior and Taofeeq, they definitely have a chance.
