Nottingham Forest Manager Steve Cooper has given a heartwarming update on the fitness status of Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi.

Having been substituted with 20 minutes to go in the victory over Southampton, the Unicorn and Imperial Academy graduate said afterwards he was suffering from “soreness in the groin”. At the time, he was expected to be out of action for a number of weeks.

Cooper recently mused: “He’s doing alright. He’s progressing, slowly,” Cooper said of Awoniyi, in his pre-match press conference ahead of the City game. “I can’t give you a date on Taiwo, but I know he’s progressing really well. Maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll have a bit more information on Taiwo.”

The Forest gaffer had previously said: “It is difficult to give a real time on it. He has been a little bit up and down with it from one day to the next, on the injury settling down and getting into rehab.

“There is nothing I can say about that, really. He’s doing everything he can. We’re doing everything. Hopefully we can get a breakthrough soon.”

Awoniyi recently posted a video on social media of himself undertaking rehab work at the Nigel Doughty Academy. He included the caption: “Steps by steps.”

Taiwo Awoniyi has registered four goals in 16 Premier League appearances this term.
