Abia Warriors have staged a major upset in their match-day nine Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL encounter, grabbing a 1-0 win over Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Saturday evening.
Pumped up after their 3-1 win over Plateau United in Umuahia last Sunday, Abia Warriors went into the game with momentum in their favour and took the lead in the 40th minute through Sunday Megwo.
The hosts, Bendel Insurance fell to a 1-0 defeat to Remo Stars in Ikenne last match-day and hoped for a return to winning ways, but “Umu Chineke” had a plan and executed it to perfection.
Imama Amapakabo’s Warriors found the opener and defended solidly to silence the outspoken Monday Odigie and his army.
The win, which is the first against Insurance, takes Abia Warriors to fourth on the log with 14 points.
Up next for Bendel Insurance is an away fixture against Sunshine Stars, while Abia Warriors are home to southeast neighbours, Heartland FC next weekend.
