Desperate For Victory: Akwa United Visit Shooting Stars In Bottom-Half Showdown

It will be a battle for redemption at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan today, when Shooting Stars host Akwa United in a match-day nine encounter of the current Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL season.

Both sides have struggled since the start of the season. While Shooting Stars have won twice and are 15th on the log, Akwa United have recorded just one win and are 18th on the log, a worrisome position for the Promise Keepers and their supporters.

The hosts, led by the highly-experienced Gbenga Ogunbote, are playing their second consecutive home game after overcoming Katsina United 1-0 six days ago.

On their part, Akwa United drew goalless with Rangers in Uyo last Monday and are in dire need of a turnaround in Ibadan today. Goalkeeper Hakeem Otuyiga, defenders Wisdom Ndon, Endurance Ebedebiri, Ubong Williams and co are in line to feature for Akwa United.

Also available for selection are Ubong Essien, who has captained the side this season, Seyi Oguntayo, Osoba Kabir, Chijioke Alaekwe and Reuben Bala.

In the build up to the game, Akwa United assistant coach, Umar Abdullahi assured that his team’s biggest challenge of poor conversion of chances would be addressed immediately.”

“It has been a very big problem in the entire team…chances can be created but converting them is another thing. In all our games, we create chances…we will get back to work and I believe we can get it right from the next game against Shooting Stars”.

For Shooting Stars, Taiye Muritala, who last played for Akwa United, will most likely lead them alongside Akwa Ibom – born stars: Ikouwem Utin, Akpan Joshua and Monday Gideon. Other stars expected on parade are Lawal Abdullahi, Ayodeji Bamidele, Samuel Ayanrinde, Adams Mustapha among others.Kickoff is 4pm at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

Will it be win number three for the hosts? Can the visitors cause a major upset and grab their first away win of the season? Or will the spoils be shared?

Fingers crossed!
