Irish-Nigerian forward Romeo Akachukwu scored as Southampton secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Swansea City in the Premier League Cup on Friday evening, bringing their points tally to seven out of a possible nine.
The match featured goals from Baylee Dipepa and Akachukwu, while Swansea’s Aimar Govea found the net during stoppage time in the second half.
The contest began evenly, with both teams vying for dominance. Southampton registered the first shot on target when Akachukwu made a determined run into the box, forcing a save from Swansea goalkeeper Evan Watts.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Will Merry evaded his defender on the left wing and delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Dipepa, who skillfully controlled the ball and finished off the post.
Shortly after the hour mark, Southampton extended their lead. Akachukwu applied pressure on the Swansea defense, regained possession, and confidently slotted the ball into the far corner of the net.
Swansea managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time with a goal from substitute Aimar Govea, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.
