Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has credited Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles’ caretaker coach, for revitalizing the team as they stand on the brink of securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Appointed in September in an interim capacity, Eguavoen has transformed the squad following a challenging 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Nigeria is now just one point away from confirming their AFCON spot, needing only a draw against Benin tonight in Abidjan to seal qualification for the tournament in Morocco.
Ikpeba, speaking on Monday Night Football on SuperSport TV, praised the coach’s impact, saying, “There’s now hunger, a new belief and commitment, and credit must go to Eguavoen. They are determined to make Nigerians proud again.”
Eguavoen, who has previously managed the national team in various stints, is yet to decide whether he will take up the role permanently.
“He has a decision to make after the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. It’s his decision and that of the NFF,” Ikpeba noted, leaving the choice up to Eguavoen and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Nigeria currently leads Group D with ten points, with Benin trailing in second with six points from four games. A draw will secure Nigeria’s qualification, while Benin will need a win to stay ahead of Rwanda, who are currently in third.
Looking ahead to the match, Ikpeba expressed confidence in the team’s depth and talent. “You must respect Benin and so this game will be tough,” he said. “The Eagles have so much talent and should do the job on the day.”
