Nigeria’s interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has announced his starting lineup for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic.
With three victories in their last four matches, including a draw against Rwanda in Kigali, the Super Eagles are in a strong position with 10 points, four ahead of second-placed Benin Republic, who faced a setback in their last outing. A win for Nigeria would almost secure their top position in the group as they head into the final matchday.
Conversely, the Cheetahs, currently on six points, are under pressure to avoid further mistakes after their recent loss, as they risk being overtaken if they drop their last two matches and Rwanda, sitting on five points, manages to gain at least two points. Even Libya, with just one point, could surpass Benin Republic if they defeat Rwanda and the Cheetahs lose to Nigeria.
These circumstances set the stage for an intense 90 minutes at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan on Thursday evening.
The Super Eagles will adopt a 3-4-3 formation, featuring Auxerre’s Gabriel Osho making his international debut.
Ola Aina retains his position as the right wing-back, while Chief Stanley Nwabali continues in goal ahead of Maduka Okoye.
Bruno Onyemaechi will play as the left wing-back, supported by William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey in a three-man defense alongside Osho.
In midfield, Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi partners with Alex Iwobi, while Victor Osimhen leads the attack as the sole striker, flanked by Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman.
