Spanish La Liga clubs Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo are reportedly in a race to sign Super Eagles forward Josh Maja, whose stellar performances for West Bromwich Albion have attracted widespread attention.
Maja has been pivotal for Carlos Corberán’s side this season, netting nine goals and providing one assist in 15 appearances. His contributions have helped West Brom climb to fifth place in the Championship standings, six points shy of the second automatic promotion spot occupied by Sheffield United.
Reports from Super Deporte suggest that Real Sociedad is prepared to rival Celta Vigo for the 24-year-old’s signature during the January transfer window. The Spanish clubs are keen to bolster their attacking options, and Maja’s form has made him a top target.
West Brom, however, have placed a €20 million price tag on the striker in a bid to deter suitors. The Nigerian international joined the club in the summer of 2023 from French side Bordeaux on a three-year contract, which runs until 2026.
While the Baggies hold the advantage of a long-term deal, their negotiating position may weaken by 2025 unless they extend his contract. Talks of a new deal are reportedly on the table, but it remains uncertain whether Maja would commit, particularly with the lure of top-flight Spanish football on the horizon.
For Sociedad, signing Maja could add depth to their attack as they juggle domestic and European commitments. Meanwhile, Celta Vigo, currently battling relegation in La Liga, view Maja as a potential game-changer in their survival quest.
Maja’s future at West Brom may hinge on the club’s promotion campaign. Should they miss out on a Premier League return, the forward might find the prospect of competing in La Liga too tempting to resist.
