Southampton head coach Martin Russell has delivered positive news on Paul Onuachu’s injury sustained during last weekend’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool at St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Super Eagles striker, making his first Premier League start in over a year, was substituted in the 51st minute after an impressive showing.
Speaking ahead of Southampton’s crucial fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion, Russell reassured fans that Onuachu’s injury is not as severe as initially feared and hinted at a possible swift return to action.
“Adam’s [Lallana] out, and Paul’s being assessed, so fingers crossed that big Paul will come through all right. It’s not a bad injury at all, which is good news for us,” Russell revealed, as reported by the Daily Echo.
The Scottish manager added, “It’s just a niggle, so hopefully we can manage that and get him involved. He did brilliantly and seems to be fine, recovering quite nicely. We had it scanned straight away because it was a bit of a worry. He brings something completely different to the team, and he’s worked so hard to adapt to what we want from him.”
Onuachu’s impact has been evident, with Russell praising the striker’s dedication and hard work. “Paul’s been desperate to play, and I’m pleased for him. Now we need to try and get him on the pitch tomorrow if possible, or as soon as we can,” he concluded.
Southampton, currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, face Brighton & Hove Albion this evening in a critical encounter. Although even a win won’t lift them off the foot of the standings, the return of Onuachu to the lineup would provide a significant boost as they fight to turn their season around.
