Bayer 04 Leverkusen head coach, Xabi Alonso, has vowed to take action against Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface, after the 23-year-old was caught recklessly driving while using his phone in Germany.
Boniface, who has been in stellar form this season with eight goals in 15 games, was caught in a video using his phone while driving his Mercedes-AMG at 140 km/h—20 km/h above the speed limit on the route.
The footage, which briefly circulated on Instagram, showed Boniface seemingly reading comments about Bayer Leverkusen’s lineup ahead of their Champions League match against Salzburg.
The incident follows a previous close call for the striker, who survived a car crash just six weeks ago after Leverkusen’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt. This recent act has raised concern about Boniface’s safety and the safety of others on the road.
Leverkusen officials have since released a statement confirming they are investigating the matter and will take the appropriate steps to address the situation. Alonso, speaking at a pre-match press conference, expressed his disapproval of the behavior, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable.
“I don’t like it, it’s obviously not good, and of course, it’s not allowed to happen. I haven’t seen Boni, but he knows it’s not allowed. We have to tell him he’s not allowed to do something like this,” the former Liverpool midfielder said in his pre-match conference, as revealed by BeIN Sports Philippines..”
The Spanish coach further confirmed that he would meet with Boniface to discuss the gravity of the situation.
Leverkusen, currently sitting fourth in the Bundesliga standings, are nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich as they prepare for their next league fixture.
