Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, has pledged to secure additional high-profile friendly matches for the Super Falcons as part of their preparation for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Gusau also commended the Super Falcons for their spirited performance in their 2-1 loss to France during an international friendly match.
The game, which took place as part of the FIFA international window, showcased the team’s growing strength and offered invaluable experience as they prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco next year.
Gusau expressed pride in the team’s resilience against a formidable French side and promised to keep organizing such high-caliber matches in building the Falcons’ confidence and competitiveness.
“As we promised Nigeria that anytime we have an international window, we’ll try and see how we can organize a grade-A match for our national teams. This happened to be one of them,” he said.
The NFF president highlighted the integration of new talent, particularly home-based players, as one of the match’s biggest positives.
“And you saw the discovery of some of our home-based that were introduced into the game. And they performed extremely well. And so I must say I’m highly delighted, I’m happy with the performance of the girls,” he added.
Looking ahead, Gusau reiterated the federation’s commitment to ensuring the team’s optimal preparation for WAFCON. He reassured fans that the Super Falcons will receive robust support to strengthen their chances of clinching the title in Morocco.
“By the grace of God, we’ll continue to give them all the support that they needed going to the upcoming WAFCON in July in Morocco,” he stated.
Gusau also revealed plans to secure additional top-tier fixtures for the team, underscoring the importance of maintaining competitive momentum.
“This window, I’m also going to look for a grade-A match… you know, when we try to play Algeria, we try to introduce all the home-based girls. You see, some of them were actually able to compete with high-profile national teams in the world.”
“And I want to assure them that by the grace of God, we’ll do whatever we can to ensure that we give them the good preparation they deserve before going to the WAFCON in Morocco,” he noted.
The friendly against France is part of the NFF’s broader strategy to expose the Super Falcons to high-level competition, a move aimed at positioning the team as a dominant force on the African and global stage.
