Stand-in CHAN Eagles coach Daniel Ogunmodede has emphasized the significance of securing qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), stating that it would bolster the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), its players, and local coaches.
He made the comments after the Eagles’ goalless draw against Ghana in Accra on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of the decisive return leg scheduled for Saturday in Uyo, Ogunmodede expressed satisfaction with the result in Ghana but maintained that qualification remains the ultimate goal.
“I am satisfied with the draw,” Ogunmodede said. “Now it is for us to qualify for the CHAN. Qualification will add more value to our league, the players and the indigenous coaches.”
Reflecting on the game in Accra, Ogunmodede acknowledged a shaky start but praised his team for their improved performance in the second half.
Team captain Nduka Junior also exuded confidence ahead of the return leg, expressing the team’s determination to secure victory on home soil. “We hope to consolidate on the result in Ghana in the second leg,” he said.
The stakes are high as the aggregate winners of this final playoff will earn a spot in the delayed 2024 CHAN tournament, set to take place in February across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
A win in Uyo would not only ensure Nigeria’s place in the tournament but also serve as a testament to the growing strength of the NPFL.
