Black Galaxies’ aspirations for a second consecutive appearance in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) were thwarted following a 3-1 loss to Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.
Defensive mistakes and squandered chances proved detrimental as the Super Eagles executed a precise first-half display, securing their spot in the 2025 CHAN finals.
Nigeria quickly established their superiority, with Ismaila Sodiq scoring in the 19th minute after taking advantage of a defensive error.
Nduka Junior extended the lead in the 22nd minute with a powerful shot that left Ghana’s goalkeeper helpless. The hosts maintained their offensive pressure, and Isaac Saviour netted a third goal in the 25th minute, effectively putting the match out of reach before halftime.
The Black Galaxies, who required either a scoring draw or a victory to advance, struggled to find their footing in the first half but began to show improvement in the second.
Stephen Amankona from Berekum Chelsea managed to score for Ghana in the 73rd minute with a well-executed shot, providing a brief moment of hope. However, despite their heightened efforts, Nigeria’s defense held firm, thwarting Ghana’s attempts to stage a comeback.
This outcome signifies a disappointing conclusion to Ghana’s CHAN journey, with Nigeria avenging their earlier elimination in the 2023 qualifiers. As the Black Galaxies contemplate this setback, the emphasis will now be on rebuilding and preparing for upcoming competitions.
