Super Eagles Leftback Wins Boavista Player of the Month Award

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has been recognized as Boavista’s Player of the Month for December, earning the Estrella Galicia award through a fan vote conducted on the club’s official platforms.

The announcement was made via Boavista’s website, acknowledging Onyemaechi’s consistent performances during a challenging season.

Expressing his gratitude upon receiving the award, the 24-year-old Onyemaechi dedicated the honour to his teammates and the club’s supporters.

“I want to thank the fans who voted for me and also Estrella Galicia. But it’s not just about this award—it’s about the team’s commitment and effort, even when the results don’t go our way,” he remarked.

The versatile left-back, a crucial figure for Boavista, also highlighted the importance of their upcoming match against FC Arouca.

With both teams tied at 12 points and struggling in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, the encounter could play a pivotal role in their respective survival bids.

“Every game is a final for us, and every point matters,” Onyemaechi stated. “We are determined to get back to winning ways and give our fans their first home win. They’ve always supported us, rain or shine, and that means a lot to the team.”

Onyemaechi’s ability to excel in multiple roles has been a significant advantage for Boavista. Whether in defense, midfield, or attack, the Nigerian international has showcased his versatility and commitment.

“I feel comfortable playing in different positions—defence, midfield, or even attack. The most important thing is to be available to help the team achieve its goals.”

Despite Boavista’s current 17th position in the league standings, Onyemaechi remains optimistic about the team’s prospects. “Our biggest goal is to climb up the league table. Personal goals? We all have them, but what matters most is the team’s success,” he concluded.

Onyemaechi joined Boavista from Feirense in 2022, initially on loan, before the club made the move permanent in June 2023.

Internationally, he made his debut for Nigeria in a commanding 6–0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. His contributions were instrumental in Nigeria’s journey to the AFCON final, where they narrowly lost 2–1 to Ivory Coast.

With the Estrella Galicia award now in his cabinet, Onyemaechi will aim to inspire Boavista in their fight for survival, starting with the critical clash against Arouca.
