Former Flying Eagles coach Paul Aigbogun has highlighted the global decline in prolific goalscorers, attributing the issue to inadequate football development at a young age.
In an interview with Brila.net, Aigbogun noted that this challenge extends beyond Nigeria, affecting Africa and the global football community.
He stressed the importance of foundational skills such as passing and finishing being taught during a player’s formative years, as these techniques become more difficult to master later in their careers.
“Not only Nigerian players, but if you look at Africa or around the world, there is actually a lack of goal scorers compared to many years before,” Aigbogun remarked.
He specifically addressed Nigeria’s challenges in producing consistent goalscorers, attributing the struggles to developmental shortcomings. “If we look at Nigeria in particular, it is down to football development at a young age,” he added.
Aigbogun’s insights underscored the importance of nurturing talent from grassroots levels to address the decline and ensure a steady pipeline of goal-scoring talents in the future.
