Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface are in high spirits as they celebrate Taiwo Awoniyi’s impressive goal that helped Nottingham Forest secure a 3-0 victory over Wolves on Monday night.
Awoniyi made a significant impact just six minutes after being brought on, scoring in the 90+4 minute and ending a 324-day goal drought. This marked his first goal of the season and the first of the year, bringing his total in the Premier League to 17 since joining from Union Berlin in 2022.
With this achievement, Awoniyi has climbed to 11th place in the Nigerian goal scorers’ chart in the Premier League, surpassing Odion Ighalo, who now sits in 12th. Before this match, both players were tied at 16 goals, with Awoniyi last finding the net in February 2023 when Nottingham Forest defeated West Ham United 2-0.
At the top of the Nigerian goal scorers’ list is Yakubu Aiyegbeni with 95 goals, followed by Kanu Nwankwo with 54, Efan Ekoku with 52, and Shola Ameobi rounding out the top five with 43 goals.
Kelechi Iheanacho holds the sixth position with 42 goals, while Peter Odemwingie follows in seventh with 36 goals. Obafemi Martins ranks eighth with 28 goals, and Alex Iwobi is ninth with 27 goals. Victor Anichebe rounds out the top ten Nigerian goal scorers in the Premier League since 1992 with 26 goals.
After a prolonged injury layoff, Taiwo Awoniyi found himself sidelined from the Nottingham Forest lineup. However, the strong performance of Chris Wood has relegated Awoniyi further down the selection order, even after his return to fitness.
Nottingham Forest’s recent victory marks their sixth consecutive win, the longest streak in the Premier League for the 2024/2025 season, positioning them as contenders for a Champions League spot.
