In the early 2000s, Christian Obodo was seen as the natural successor to Austin Jay Jay Okocha.
Obodo had grand aspirations for his career.
In 2001, the Plateau United graduate represented the Flying Eagles, under the guidance of the late Stephen Keshi, at the African Youth Championship held in Ethiopia. Although the team was eliminated from the tournament with only one point from three matches, Obodo’s talent shone through alongside notable players like Bartholomew Ogbeche and Christopher Justice.
Many regard Obodo as one of the most skilled and talented midfielders to have played for the Super Eagles since the 1994 era. It is no surprise that he was often described as a bundle of skills, a phrase that has become synonymous with his exceptional ability.
Rise to Prominence
The 2001-02 season marked the year Obodo truly emerged, accumulating significant playing time with Perugia.
He showcased his versatility in both offensive and defensive roles, adept at delivering both inswinging and outswinging passes from the midfield.
His array of skills reflects a remarkable level of confidence on the pitch, as he consistently takes on defenders. Known for his dribbling ability, dynamic play, and powerful runs, he excels when operating through the center, where he frequently drives towards the goal.
Throughout the 2002-03 season, he continued to attract attention.
In 2003, he made his long-anticipated debut for the Super Eagles during the LG Cup, participating in matches against Ghana and Cameroon.

In 2004, Fiorentina acquired him as a crucial component of their rebuilding efforts upon their return to Serie A. They initially purchased half of his registration rights, leading to a blind auction in 2005 between La Viola and Perugia to determine his future. Perugia won the auction but quickly transferred him to Udinese.
Obodo made his UEFA Champions League debut with Udinese in the 2005-06 season, partnering in midfield with Sulley Muntari until Muntari’s transfer to Portsmouth in 2007.
He experienced unremarkable stints at Torino and Lecce.
Later Career
Eventually, he faded from the spotlight and joined Dinamo Minsk in 2013.
His subsequent transfers to Olhanense, Skoda Xanthi, Concordia Chiajna, Pandurii Târgu Jiu, and Apollon Smyrnis were largely unsuccessful.
