Two Italian Clubs Show Interest in Super Eagles Striker Dessers

Two Italian Serie A clubs have shown interest in securing the services of Super Eagles forward Cyriel Kolawole Dessers from Rangers in the January transfer window.

The Nigerian international has seen limited playing time under manager Philippe Clement, with Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane preferred as the starting striker.

Brazilian Danilo also ranks ahead of Dessers in the striking hierarchy, either partnering with Igamane or being deployed as a substitute.

While Dessers’ commitment and work rate have been commendable, his inconsistency in front of goal has left fans and the club wanting more. Having turned 30, the former Feyenoord forward is keen on maximizing his remaining years at the top level.

Sky Sport Italia reports that Serie A sides Cagliari and Empoli have expressed interest in the Nigerian. Dessers, who previously played for Cremonese before his 2023 move to Rangers, has experience in Italian football, which could make a return appealing for both the player and potential suitors.

French Ligue 1 side AS Saint-Etienne has also shown interest, intensifying competition for his signature.

Since joining Rangers, Dessers has scored 34 goals and provided 13 assists in 84 appearances. While those statistics are respectable, critics argue he has underperformed given the chances he’s received.

Although his preferred destination remains unclear, reports suggest his departure from Rangers is likely to be a loan deal with an option to buy at the season’s end.

Cagliari and Empoli currently sit 17th and 12th on the Serie A table, respectively. It remains to be seen whether Dessers would be willing to join a relegation-threatened side in search of increased playing time.
