Former Super Eagles forward Furo Iyenemi has cautioned his son, Kaye Furo, against representing the Nigerian national team, citing his own negative experiences with the Super Eagles.
Iyenemi, now 46, had a brief but impactful international career, making five appearances for Nigeria’s senior team and two for the U23s. He was part of the squad during the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Nigeria.
However, the former forward’s tenure with the national team left him disillusioned, particularly after he suffered a serious injury while on international duty, which he claims led to his abandonment by the Nigerian football authorities.
Kaye Furo, currently playing for the Belgian second division side and making a name for himself as a prolific forward, has scored eight goals and provided one assist in eighteen matches across all competitions.
His performances have generated significant interest from top European clubs and the Nigerian football community, with many hoping the young talent would follow in his father’s footsteps.
However, Furo senior has warned his son to avoid the pitfalls he faced during his own time with the national team. Speaking to Omasports, Iyenemi emphasized that he would not let his son suffer the same mistreatment that he endured.
“My child must not suffer as I suffered. The same must not happen to my son,” Iyenemi stated. “Don’t follow in my footsteps. Be smart.”
Kaye Furo, who is eligible to play for both Nigeria and Belgium, now faces a difficult decision regarding his international future. As his career continues to rise, many will be watching to see whether the young forward heeds his father’s advice or opts to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
