Onyemaechi in Greece to complete Olympiacos’ move amidst transfer drama

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has completed his transfer from Boavista to Olympiacos for €2.5 million, pending medical tests and final paperwork.

The reigning UEFA Europa Conference League champions successfully fended off late interest from European heavyweights Benfica and Fenerbahce, as well as earlier bids from Trabzonspor and a couple of unnamed French clubs, to secure the 25-year-old’s signature.

Onyemaechi, who has earned 11 caps for Nigeria, landed in Athens on Thursday to finalize the move and sign a three-and-a-half-year deal with Olympiacos, according to Greek outlet Parapolitika.

The Nigerian’s arrival marks the end of a fruitful stint at Boavista, where he made 77 appearances, scoring five goals and providing four assists since joining in 2020.

The deal nearly collapsed as Benfica and Fenerbahce attempted last-minute bids to hijack the transfer. Despite the drama, Olympiacos reached an agreement with Boavista, which reportedly includes a clause allowing the Portuguese side to retain a percentage of any future transfer fee.

Onyemaechi has enjoyed a standout season, featuring in all 18 league games for Boavista and contributing three goals and an assist. Renowned for his pace, physicality, and versatility, he can operate across the left flank, making him a valuable asset for Olympiacos as they aim to bolster their defensive ranks.

The defender’s stock soared after his key role in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, further cementing his reputation as a rising star.

For Boavista, Onyemaechi’s departure provides a significant financial boost as the club grapples with FIFA restrictions and looks to strengthen its squad during the winter window. However, his absence will leave a notable void in their backline as they prepare for a crucial clash with Braga this weekend.

For Olympiacos, this signing strengthens their push for both domestic and European success. Competing in the Europa League, the Greek giants see Onyemaechi as a long-term solution to their defensive needs. An official announcement of the transfer is expected within the next 24 hours.
