Super Eagles forward Umar Sadiq has expressed confidence in newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle, backing the former Mali international to have a successful tenure with the Nigerian national team.
Chelle, who was named Super Eagles head coach three weeks ago, has faced criticism from some quarters, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) coming under scrutiny for his appointment. However, Sadiq believes the decision is a step in the right direction and is optimistic about the team’s future under Chelle’s guidance.
Speaking to Sporty TV, Sadiq highlighted Chelle’s impressive work with Mali during the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“You can see what he did in the last AFCON. Everyone was thinking that Mali were also among the favourites,” Sadiq said. “You can see how they played. They were so good but they got knocked out in the quarterfinals because sometimes it is not the best that wins.”
Sadiq added that Chelle’s tactical acumen was evident during Mali’s campaign, noting: “But I can tell you I watched a lot of games of Mali because I have a teammate there. And you can see how they play. You can see the coach (Chelle) has a lot of things.”
The Real Sociedad striker believes Chelle’s style of play can bring success to Nigeria. “If Eric Chelle brings Mali’s style of play to Nigeria, I think we will go a long way forward,” Sadiq concluded.
As the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming international fixtures, all eyes will be on Chelle to see if he can replicate the tactical discipline and organization that earned him praise with Mali. The NFF will also be hoping the appointment ushers in a new era of success for Nigerian football.
