Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella has expressed his desire to return to Nigeria’s Super Eagles, hoping to earn a recall under the new national team coach.
Tella, 25, received his first call-up in 2023 under former coach Jose Peseiro for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
He made his debut in the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Kigali, Rwanda. Though he was later invited for the matchday 3 and 4 qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, he withdrew from the squad and was replaced by Rizespor midfielder Ibrahim Olawoyin.
Speaking to OmaSport TV after Bayer Leverkusen’s UEFA Champions League clash with Sparta Prague on Wednesday, Tella shared his hopes of getting another opportunity with the national team.
“Whether I feel I deserve a call is not for me to say,” Tella remarked. “I’ve never been a player that says I should be called up I have to work hard and earn my chances. If the new coach thinks I’ve done enough I will happily accept the call-up but if it’s not then I will have to work even harder.”
Tella also stated his ambition to represent Nigeria at major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. “It’s an honour to play for your country and every opportunity I get to represent I will give 100 percent and hopefully get the recognition back home,” he added.
The Leverkusen winger has made 25 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists. His latest strike came in the Champions League against Sparta Prague, further boosting his case for a Super Eagles return.
