Zamalek appoints former Super Eagles coach José Peseiro as new manager

Egyptian giants Zamalek have officially appointed José Peseiro as their new head coach, the club announced on Friday through its official social media channels.

The Portuguese tactician, who recently led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), will be tasked with guiding Zamalek in their bid to challenge for the Egyptian Premier League title. The White Knights currently sit four points behind league leaders Pyramids FC.

Peseiro gained recognition in African football after masterminding Nigeria’s impressive run at AFCON 2023, where the Super Eagles kept four consecutive clean sheets before losing 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final. Despite his success, the 63-year-old parted ways with the Nigeria Football Federation after contract renewal talks broke down.

During his tenure with the Super Eagles, Peseiro managed 22 games, securing 10 wins, five draws, and seven losses. His defensive organization and tactical approach were key in Nigeria’s AFCON campaign, and Zamalek will be hoping he brings similar stability and success to their squad.

Peseiro arrives at Zamalek with vast managerial experience, having coached clubs such as FC Porto, Sporting CP, Al Ahly, and Braga. His appointment signals the club’s ambition to reclaim dominance in Egyptian and continental football.

With his new role, Peseiro will look to make a strong impact in African football once again, as he aims to lead Zamalek to domestic and continental success.
