Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey opened his Premier League goal account as Fulham secured a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Bassey, who has been a key player under Marco Silva this season, netted the winner in the second half, moving Fulham up to eighth in the league standings and boosting their chances of securing European football.
The Nigerian defender found the back of the net with a powerful header past goalkeeper Matz Sels after Raul Jiménez flicked on a corner kick. His goal restored Fulham’s lead after Chris Wood had equalized following an opener from former Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe.
Bassey’s strike marks his first Premier League goal in 24 appearances for Fulham. With his solid defensive displays and newfound goal-scoring form, he has strengthened his case for a call-up to Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
The Super Eagles, currently fifth in Group C with three points from four games, need wins in both fixtures to revive their World Cup qualification hopes. Rwanda and South Africa currently top the group with seven points each.
