Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has voiced his criticism of Jefté and Dujon Sterling, claiming their underwhelming performances contributed to Cyriel Dessers’ struggles in the UEFA Europa League clash against Fenerbahce.
Despite a lackluster showing from Dessers, Rangers advanced to the quarterfinals following their victory over the Turkish side. The Nigerian international was substituted in the 67th minute, with Moroccan striker Hamza Igamane replacing him as the Scottish club sought to maintain their advantage from the first leg.
Rangers had secured a crucial 3-1 win in Istanbul, with Dessers playing a pivotal role by scoring a goal and providing an assist. However, in the second leg, he failed to make a significant impact before his substitution.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Halliday expressed concerns about Rangers’ attacking approach, particularly highlighting the lack of offensive contribution from the wing-backs.
“I think Rangers’ wing-backs need to offer so much more going forward in the game.,” Halliday said. “It’s just route one up to Cyriel Dessers, every attack has been central. At the moment, the wing-backs are far too deep, they’re not giving them any outlet.”
Despite his struggles against Fenerbahce, Dessers has been one of Rangers’ standout performers this season. The 30-year-old striker has netted 22 goals and provided seven assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
However, despite his impressive club form, Dessers was left out of Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe later this month.
His omission has raised eyebrows among fans, given his contributions at the club level.
With Rangers now through to the Europa League quarterfinals, Dessers will aim to bounce back and continue his strong performances as the Scottish giants pursue success on multiple fronts.
