Montpellier striker Akor Adams has opened up about the pivotal role former Super Eagles star John Utaka has played in shaping his career since joining the French club in August 2023.
Adams, who arrived at Montpellier after an impressive stint with Norwegian side Lillestrøm, where he scored 28 goals and provided seven assists in 50 matches, has made a solid start to life in Ligue 1.
Despite Montpellier’s struggles this season—they currently sit at the bottom of the table with just eight points from 13 games—Adams has contributed three goals and two assists in 11 appearances.
Speaking about Utaka’s influence, Adams expressed admiration for the Nigerian legend, who famously helped Montpellier secure the Ligue 1 title in 2012 during his time at the club from 2011 to 2013.
“John Utaka is a legend. His influence was also part of my decision to come to Montpellier,” Adams told Tribal Football.
“He had played for the club, he has won the championship with the club and he is very much adored by the fans. For me, following in those footsteps knowing that he laid the path for a young player, I was glad to take the offer to sign for Montepellier.”
Utaka, who earned 44 caps and scored six goals for Nigeria, remains an integral part of Montpellier’s coaching setup. His mentorship extends beyond tactical guidance, as he regularly offers Adams advice on how to refine his game.
“He played as a striker as I am, after games we do have discussions on what I should have done, what he thinks should have the best option,” Adams explained.
“We have these interactions striker to striker, this is so I can improve. It is a huge privilege to have him among the coaching staff at Montepellier.”
As Montpellier fights to climb out of the relegation zone, Adams hopes to build on his early contributions and lead the charge to safety. With Utaka’s mentorship and his own determination, the 23-year-old striker remains optimistic about his impact at the club.
