On Sunday, the host nation Ghana claimed victory in the inaugural WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup, overcoming Nigeria in a tense penalty shootout that ended 5-4 at the Ghanaian Centre of Excellence in Prampram, near Accra.
This thrilling match followed a goalless draw between the senior teams of both nations in an African Nations Championship qualifier held at the Accra Sports Stadium, just a short distance away. The young athletes delivered an exciting contest that culminated in a penalty shootout, where the Maidens successfully converted all five of their attempts, while Nigeria missed one.
Getrude Amoafo opened the scoring for Ghana in the 14th minute, and Priscilla Mensah quickly added a second goal just five minutes later. It seemed the Maidens were on track for a comfortable win, but Nigeria fought back fiercely.
Precious Oscar reduced the deficit with a powerful volley in the 34th minute, and Harmony Chidi equalized in the 78th minute with a stunning long-range shot that soared over goalkeeper Aishatu Fatai.
In the penalty shootout, defender Taiwo Adegoke’s attempt hit the woodwork, giving Ghana the upper hand.
