Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba has warned that Ghana will do everything possible to avoid defeat to Nigeria’s CHAN Eagles when they meet in Uyo on Saturday for the second leg of the 2024 CHAN playoffs.
After a goalless draw in Accra, the two sides are set to face off with everything on the line— the winner of the tie will secure a spot in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in February. The match in Uyo will kick off at 5pm.
“The CHAN Eagles must fight because this is one game that Ghana do not want to lose,” Ikpeba stated during a Monday Night Football appearance on SuperSport TV. “We all remember what happened with the Super Eagles with the same Ghana for the 2022 World Cup.”
Ikpeba, who enjoyed a stellar career with the Super Eagles, emphasized the significance of the match, particularly for Nigeria’s domestic league. He stressed that qualification for the 2024 CHAN would be a major boost for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and home-based players.
“This is a big chance for the league and home-based players to show what they are capable of,” he said. “Many of us have had our reservations about the players in the NPFL particularly going by their performance on the continent.”
With the tie delicately poised after the first-leg stalemate, all eyes will be on Nigeria’s CHAN Eagles as they aim to secure their place in the 2024 tournament and make a strong statement for local players in the process.
