Trabzonspor are set to renew their interest in Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu ahead of the January transfer window.
Onuachu, who joined Southampton from Genk two seasons ago, struggled to make an impact at the Premier League club due to limited opportunities under previous management.
To secure more playing time, he moved to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan last season, where he impressed with 17 goals and four assists in 25 appearances.
His standout performances sparked speculation that Trabzonspor wanted to sign him permanently. However, the Turkish club failed to reach an agreement with Southampton, leading to his return to the English side.
This season, Onuachu’s playing time has been inconsistent, but his situation improved significantly in December following the appointment of coach Ivan Juric, who replaced Russell Martin. Juric has given Onuachu more opportunities, suggesting the Nigerian may still have a role in the team moving forward.
Despite his increased involvement, reports from The Saints Centre suggest Trabzonspor are preparing to reopen negotiations with Southampton for the striker’s services in January.
Southampton are reportedly demanding a transfer fee in excess of €12 million for an outright sale, but Trabzonspor are expected to pursue another loan deal due to the high asking price.
Juric’s apparent trust in Onuachu could complicate a potential move, as the manager may be keen to retain the Nigerian forward for the remainder of the season. The coming weeks will be decisive as both clubs prepare for transfer window talks.
