The National Sports Commission (NSC) is set to implement policies that prioritize the well-being of athletes. This commitment was expressed by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko during a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN).
The delegation, led by President and former Nigerian international Tijani Babangida, also included Secretary-General Edema Fuludu, Clement Temile, Magaji Alhassan Boss, and Mrs. Rotimi Michaels.
Dikko emphasized the Commission’s initiatives, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive, aimed at enhancing the conditions for Nigerian athletes.
His words, “What I say to one, I say to all. You are here as representatives of Nigerian footballers, but I will speak to the needs of every Nigerian athlete across all sports. Their welfare will not be toyed with in this administration. We are already implementing strategies aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to prioritize the welfare of athletes, past and present, and leverage sports as a tool for national unity, youth empowerment, and economic development.”
The Chairman highlighted the significance of solidarity within the players’ union, stressing that individual interests should not eclipse the collective objective of promoting the welfare and progress of Nigerian football players and athletes as a whole.
“As far back as 2003, Tijani Babangida here is quite aware then, I had worked towards introducing a pension scheme for professional footballers and athletes in Nigeria, a vision that remains critical under the current NSC agenda. There should be collaboration and solidarity among all stakeholders because a united sports sector is essential for achieving sustainable growth and success”, he added.
The Commission has reiterated its dedication to building partnerships, enacting policies, and spearheading initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, performance, and international competitiveness of Nigerian athletes, all while promoting the Renewed Hope Agenda through sports.
Previously, the PFAN delegation extended their congratulations to Mallam Dikko on his new role and praised the President for appointing an experienced stakeholder to lead Nigerian sports. They encouraged the Chairman to tackle pressing issues, especially the problem of factionalism within the players’ union, and expressed their steadfast support as he undertakes transformative reforms in the realm of Nigerian sports.
