San Diego Wave FC has officially signed 19-year-old Nigerian forward Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, a finalist for the CAF Young Women’s Player of the Year. The transfer from Rivers Angels FC, a top-tier club in the Nigerian Women’s Premier League, was completed for an undisclosed fee. Okwuchukwu has committed to a one-year contract that extends through 2025.
The Royal Queens’ product addition to the Wave’s roster for the 2025 season is contingent upon passing a medical examination and obtaining her International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa.
“We are very pleased to welcome Chiamaka to the Wave family,” said San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. “Her signing is the latest example of our intention to add promising young players to the roster. With her skillset, we believe Chiamaka will complement our current attacking players very well and be a key contributor to the team.”
Okwuchukwu recently delivered an outstanding performance with the Nigeria U-20 Women’s National Team at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup held in Colombia. She participated in all four matches, netting two goals and contributing one assist. At just 16 years old, Okwuchukwu previously represented Nigeria in the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, where she played a crucial role in leading the team to an undefeated group stage and a quarterfinal appearance, ultimately losing to the Netherlands.
For the 2025 season, Okwuchukwu will take up an international slot on San Diego’s roster.
