La Liga club Real Betis are reportedly in pursuit of Nigerian striker Akor Adams, currently playing for Montpellier in France’s Ligue 1.
Despite mixed performances since joining Montpellier, the 24-year-old forward has caught the attention of Betis, who are weighing a move during the January transfer window.
Adams, who was signed by Montpellier from Norwegian side Lillestrøm SK in 2023 for €4.5 million, has contributed three goals and three assists in 15 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
While his statistics are not eye-catching, his potential is not lost on Betis, who are keen to bolster their forward options. According to Foot Mercato, Montpellier are open to parting ways with Adams for a fee of €8 million, effectively doubling their initial investment in the player.
Standing at 1.90 meters, Adams has the physical presence that Betis are looking for, and despite his struggles in France, the La Liga side believes there is untapped potential.
The club is reportedly considering a loan deal with an option to buy, offering a low-risk way to assess the forward’s suitability before committing to a long-term deal.
Adams’ career has been a journey of ups and downs. After moving from Nigeria’s Jamba Football Academy to Norway’s Sogndal Fotball in 2018, he faced injury setbacks but still managed to score 10 goals in 28 matches by 2021.
His subsequent move to Lillestrøm saw him make an immediate impact, earning praise and even comparisons to Erling Haaland, particularly after scoring in both a cup match against Nardo and his Eliteserien debut in April 2022.
However, his time at Montpellier has not been as fruitful. Despite his physical attributes and early promise, Adams has struggled to consistently deliver in France.
Montpellier, currently struggling near the bottom of the Ligue 1 standings, may look to cash in on the striker while his market value remains healthy.
The move could be a win-win for both clubs.
Real Betis are eager to improve their attacking options and increase their competitiveness in La Liga, while Montpellier could secure vital funds to address their financial challenges.
With Betis also reportedly eyeing Brazilian winger Antony, the club is clearly focused on reinforcing its squad for the second half of the season. If the deal goes through, Akor Adams could find himself in Spain, hoping to reignite his career in a new league.
