Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers has expressed optimism about a potential return to the Eredivisie during the winter transfer window, following his difficulties at Scottish giants Rangers.
The Nigerian international, who joined Rangers from Cremonese, has found himself sidelined after losing his starting position to Hamza Igamane, the in-form Moroccan forward.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Dessers opened up about his situation at Rangers, admitting that the change in his role has been challenging.
“Last month I lost my starting spot. The boy who is playing now is also a good striker (Hamza Igamane, ed.), he also scores. I try to support him and help him. I want the team to win. But it is difficult. I don’t know what my perspective is now.”
At 30 years old, Dessers is determined to continue playing regularly. His contract at Rangers runs for another two years, but he acknowledged that the club may consider a transfer, especially if they can recoup some of their investment.
“I can imagine that Rangers might want to earn something from me now. But January is a difficult window. Clubs that are doing well probably also have a striker who is doing well. And few clubs that need goals will immediately have the millions ready. We have to wait and see.”
Dessers further emphasized his desire to play regularly, ideally for Rangers, but he made it clear that if internal discussions lead to a change in direction, he would be open to exploring options.
” I am at a great club, but I am 30 years old and want to play every week. Preferably at Rangers. If there are different feelings about that internally, then we need to talk.”
A return to the Netherlands, where Dessers previously enjoyed success, is a possibility he is considering. However, he noted that it may not be simple. “Difficult. Feyenoord now has three excellent strikers. The other clubs I played for also have a special place in my heart. But I do have a certain price and there are only a few clubs that can pay that. In any case, I want to play in a serious competition, for the prizes. The fire is still burning,” Dessers said
Clubs in Belgium, such as AA Gent and Royal Antwerp FC, are also potential destinations, with both teams reportedly seeking a striker. However, Dessers’ valuation may pose a hurdle for these clubs, which could find the asking price too steep.
As the transfer window continues, Dessers’ future remains uncertain, but the striker is confident that opportunities will arise as he seeks to reignite his career and return to regular playing time.
