Sevilla manager, García Pimienta, has addressed the recent criticism from former Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, regarding the situation of Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho at the Spanish club.
Iheanacho, who joined Sevilla as a free agent in the summer, has faced challenges settling in Spain, leading to speculation about his future. The Nigerian international has been linked with a return to the Premier League and a potential move to Greece during the winter transfer window.
Finidi George, a former Real Betis player, expressed his disapproval of how Sevilla has treated Iheanacho, stating that the club has not given him sufficient time to adapt. He suggested that the lack of opportunities for Iheanacho represents a form of disrespect towards the player.
However, Pimienta disagreed with Finidi’s assessment, insisting that Sevilla had not disrespected Iheanacho in any way. In a press conference ahead of their match against Espanyol, Pimienta explained: “We have not disrespected Kelechi at any time, clearly he has played less than others, I understand that, but disrespecting him, we have never done that. I am happy with him and he trains well. For me he is a player like any other in the squad and tomorrow he will be included.
On the topic of Iheanacho’s potential transfer, Pimienta confirmed that the Nigerian has received offers during the current transfer window, but it will ultimately be up to the player to decide his next move.
Iheanacho, who has been sidelined with an injury, is expected to be part of Sevilla’s squad for their upcoming clash with Espanyol. Despite his limited role this season, Iheanacho has managed to score three goals and provide one assist in eleven appearances across all competitions.
