Cagliari sporting director Nereo Bonato has shed light on why the Serie A club opted against making a move for Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers during the winter transfer window, despite speculation surrounding the Nigerian forward’s future.
Dessers remained at Rangers past Monday’s transfer deadline, despite reportedly attracting about ten deals to leave in January.
One of his representatives recently revealed that the 30-year-old had received ten transfer offers last month, but he chose to remain in Scotland rather than pursue a loan move elsewhere.
Cagliari were one of the clubs reportedly interested in signing Dessers, but Bonato has now clarified why they ultimately decided against a move.
Speaking to Rangers News, he explained the club’s reasoning.
“It would have been risky to sign an experienced player who might have struggled to settle in.
“We have [Leonardo] Pavoletti and also Kingstone [Mutandwa], without forgetting the youth teamers like [Andrea] Cogoni and [Carlo] Soldati, who are making their mark.”
Despite the transfer links, Dessers has been in strong form for Rangers, scoring three goals and providing an assist in his last five appearances.
Philippe Clement’s side have been enjoying a solid run of results and will look to continue their momentum when they face second-tier side Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
A win would see Rangers advance to the quarter-finals as they aim to make it seven victories in their last eight games.
